Everybody Rise began as a blog about theater and is now a compilation of my articles on television, theater, and books. The title is an homage to “The Ladies Who Lunch” from the musical Company. Check out the inimitable Elaine Stritch who originated the role of Joanne in the 1970 Broadway production. Besides the wink to the song's final lyric, “everybody rise” makes me think of a standing ovation. It's become overly expected, especially on Broadway, but when it's deserved, it's marvelous.
